It began as a collaboration of several notable literary figures led by Joseph-Charles Taché. Others included Henri-Raymond Casgrain, Hubert LaRue, and Antoine Gérin-Lajoie. It focused primarily on Canadian content which included a wide range of topics—folklore, poetry, serialized fiction, and travel. The magazine lasted for 48 issues before the original founders broke apart but it started a literary renaissance in the province that influenced works for years afterwards. Author Bio for Taché, Joseph-Charles
Joseph-Charles Taché (1820-1894) was a student at the Petit Séminaire de Québec and followed this by a study of medicine, receiving his medical diploma in 1844. He practiced medicine for a few years and then became active, first, in politics and, then, in newspaper publishing as a writer and editor. In 1864 he began a long career as a senior civil servant in Ottawa, working for 24 years in literary, cultural, scientific and political areas. He oversaw the 1871 census.
