Description:

These stories, written in response to huge popular demand, give us classic Berry Pleydell, Yates’ finest comic character, at the top of his form. The first story sees Berry capturing a German spy at a village cricket match in 1914, and things get more bizarre from then on. A self-consciously nostalgic work harking back to more decorous days consisting of tense plotting and high farce of the best kind. [Suggest a different description.]

Author Bio for Mercer, Cecil William

Author Image

Cecil William Mercer (1885-1960), better known by his pen-name, Dornford Yates, was a British author. Trained as a lawyer, he turned to writing in the 1920s. He is best known for a series of books featuring playboy Berry Pleydell. These books described Berry's wealthy, indolent life and his circle of friends. The books were very popular in the interwar years. Mercer also wrote a series of international thrillers centred around Richard Chandos, a suave crime solving detective. His work was influenced by the writings of Anthony Hope who was his uncle. (Chambers Biographical Dictionary)
