Author Bio for Laureys, Henry
Henry Laureys (1882-1958) was a Belgian born diplomat and economist. He came to Canada in 1911 to teach in Montreal. In 1940 he was appointed as ambassador to South Africa. He also did ambassadorial work in Denmark and Peru. He authored several texts on the economy of Canada.
Author Bio for Innis, Harold Adams
Harold Adams Innis (1894-1952) was a Canadian professor of political economy. He did pioneering work in Canadian economic and communication studies. His work gave rise to a distinctively Canadian approach to these subjects, and his later attempts to analyse the crisis in Western civilization led the way to a new emphasis on the importance of different modes of communications for understanding the nature and development of a society. To a considerable extent, the detachment of our contemporary Canadian academic community from political involvement derives from his attitudes and efforts. Innis's communications research culminated in his attempt to explain the connection between Canada and Western civilization. (The Canadian Encyclopedia)
Author Bio for Leacock, Stephen Butler
Stephen Leacock (1869-1944) was a Canadian author. Born in England, his family moved to Canada when he was six years old. The family settled in Sutton, Ontario on the south shore of Lake Simcoe. A bright student, he went to Upper Canada College where he was top of his class. After a brief stint at teaching (which he loathed) he eventually went on to become chair of the Department of Economics and Political Science at McGill University. Although he wrote several books on these august subjects, he is best known for his light satirical and humorous writing, in particular, "Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town". (Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature)
