| Description: | Captain Herbert Dixon, retired after 40 years work at sea and pensioned off, and Captain Henry Homan, a retired widower and a good friend of Herbert’s, are both at loose ends and facing a dreary prospect of being dominated by a couple of unpleasant women. They hatch a scheme to escape to the South Seas. They place an advertisement in the “Marriage Broker”. The selected respondent ends up being Java Hardy, a niece who possesses her own ship. Java is also seeking to escape a constrained life in England. The three quickly make their escape to Paradise Island where they begin an idyllic life of comfort and profit. In due course, a young shipwrecked sailor, Roger Wynyard, joins the band. Toss in a witch doctor, Hanua, and some marauding cannibals and you end up with a complete South Sea adventure. Author Bio for Moresby, Elizabeth Louisa
Elizabeth Louisa Moresby (1862-1931) was a Canadian novelist. She was born in England. Her father was admiral in the navy who helped explore the Australasian archipelago. During the first part of her life she lived and travelled in the Orient in such places as India, China, Burma, and Japan. She eventually settled in Victoria, B.C. where she became known as a proponent of Oriental customs and philosophy. Her experiences in Asia influenced her writing when she began to write books at the age of 60. Women authors of her time were known to write under pen-names and she produced about 30 books under such names as Lily Adams Beck, E. Barrington and Louis Moresby.
