From the book's dustcover:
In the last days of the Viking era, young Runolf of Orkney, dazzled by an idealization of the Viking world of folksong and myth, set out to seek his fortune with a band of ruthless adventurers.
Armed with an ancient Viking sword, Runolf had many adventures, for people had not yet forgotten their terror of the Viking raiders, and they treated with respect--and fear--one who carried such a weapon.
But Runolf's dream of heroic deeds was shattered when his comrades deserted him, and he realized that there are other valid values in life than mere physical courage. And thus, this sensitive, glory-blinded boy took his first step toward manhood.
Stark, poetic, compassionate, SPLINTERED SWORD is at once a perceptive treatment of a young boy's search for identity and a brilliant recreation of a bygone era. [Suggest a different description.]
