The 'Mémoires' of the Duc de Saint-Simon are among the most famous writings in French literature. They constitute a brilliant first-hand account of life at the court of Louis XIV, its politics, the courtiers, the extravagance, the intrigues. Reading the complete work is a daunting enterprise; the present Selections include an introduction by the editor and numerous notes in English. The original French extracts start with a presentation of the king himself and Mme de Maintenon in their daily life. There follows the account of the review at Compiègne, and the greater part of the famous chapters on the death of Monseigneur. Lastly there are thirteen portraits, including such masterpieces as Conti, Cardinal d’Estrées, Fénelon, the Duke and Duchess of Burgundy, and the Duke of Orléans.--preface.
