Author Bio for Dashwood, Edmée Elizabeth Monica (née de la Pasture)
E. M. Delafield (1890-1943) was an English author. Edmée Elizabeth Monica de la Pasture was born in Sussex, England to parents of former French aristocracy. She grew up in Edwardian England which is reflected in her writing. She joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment at the outbreak of World War One and worked for the Ministry of National Services in Bristol. She married Major Arthur Paul Dashwood of the Royal Engineers and they had a son and a daughter. Eventually they settled in Devon, where she lived a life amongst the genteel provincial middle class. She published her first novel in 1917 and followed this with 40 more books, mainly fiction over the next twenty years. She was known for gentle satire of mundane middle-class life. This is highlighted in a series of books about 'a provincial lady'. "Thank Heaven Fasting" is generally agreed to be her best work. Some of her fiction addresses social issues such as "Nothing is Safe" about the impact of divorce on children. "Messalina of the Suburbs" is based on the infamous Thompson-Bywaters murder case.
