| Description: | Far in the north woods of Ontario the Indians in their lonely wigwams are haunted by superstitious fears of evil spirits which the Indians believe can take possession of a person and turn him into a cannibal. When Ann Jackman came back to Fox Island from boarding school for the Christmas holidays, the Indians were in the grip of such a panic. Wen-dah-ban, a young hunter and friend of the Jackmans, believing that he had been conjured into a windigo, had disappeared into the forest. Ann, with others, undertook to find him. They soon discovered that they also had to deal with a white trader, whose unscrupulous schemes added to the dangers of the journey. Mrs. Pinkerton's expert story is filled with the crispness of cold days on the trail and the loneliness of night camps in the forest. Through it runs the warm family life of the Jackmans and their sympathetic understanding of the Indians, who are their friends.—adapted from the dustcover. [Suggest a different description.] |
