Author Bio for Guedalla, Philip

Philip Guedalla (1889-1944) was a British historian and biographer. He was born in London, England to a Jewish family of Spanish descent. He initially trained as a lawyer which he practised for 10 years before turning to writing. He is best known for his biographies of the Duke of Wellington and Prime Ministers Gladstone and Churchill. He described biography as “a very definite region bounded on the north by history, on the south by fiction, on the east by obituary, and on the west by tedium.” He tried unsuccessfully to be elected to parliament as a Liberal.
