| Description: | Written in 1943, Middle East 1940-1942 was the first authoritative account of the decisive part played by the RAF in the Middle Eastern, African and Mediterranean theatres in the first half of the war. Spanning the long series of campaigns fought from the outbreak of war to the capture of Tripoli, Guedalla provides a detailed narrative of these early years.
Philip Guedalla was attached to the RAF at the beginning of the war, receiving a complete tour of the scenes of operation in the Western Desert, Malta, Syria, Iraq and Eritrea. [Suggest a different description.] |

Author Bio for Guedalla, Philip
Philip Guedalla (1889-1944) was a British historian and biographer. He was born in London, England to a Jewish family of Spanish descent. He initially trained as a lawyer which he practised for 10 years before turning to writing. He is best known for his biographies of the Duke of Wellington and Prime Ministers Gladstone and Churchill. He described biography as “a very definite region bounded on the north by history, on the south by fiction, on the east by obituary, and on the west by tedium.” He tried unsuccessfully to be elected to parliament as a Liberal. He was active in Jewish organizations both political and historical. (Jewish Lives Project)
