Description:

A story of Lance Dunbar, a wounded WWI soldier whose cousin and namesake, who had been killed in France during the same war, leaves him an inheritance. He had been the poor Lance Dunbar but now he was the rich one and his cousin was now, in his words, “nothing”. His cousin had been a writer and a traveller. Rereading his book inspires Lance to make his cousin’s pilgrimage and “stand where he had stood, and discover for myself whether any far-off vibrations as from the dead booming of a bronze bell would catch my inner ear”. His journey begins in Japan where he meets Miyuki.—From the 1922 hardback edition. [Suggest a different description.]

Author Bio for Moresby, Elizabeth Louisa

Author Image

Elizabeth Louisa Moresby (1862-1931) was a Canadian novelist. She was born in England. Her father was admiral in the navy who helped explore the Australasian archipelago. During the first part of her life she lived and travelled in the Orient in such places as India, China, Burma, and Japan. She eventually settled in Victoria, B.C. where she became known as a proponent of Oriental customs and philosophy. Her experiences in Asia influenced her writing when she began to write books at the age of 60. Women authors of her time were known to write under pen-names and she produced about 30 books under such names as Lily Adams Beck, E. Barrington and Louis Moresby.
