Description:

Inspector Silver had made his debut in The Mayfair Mystery and he returns for his second case here. The story opens on the late night train into London’s Kings Cross, where the guard is shocked to discover the lifeless body of a young woman alone in a compartment and with the outer door open. Silver, described as a lean and rather casual-looking man, arrives promptly to set inquiries in motion and soon discovers that the woman’s bag is missing. When the dead body of a man is discovered thirty miles up the line upon which the train travelled it begins to look like a case of attempted murder/suicide. However it transpires that the man has been strangled and thrown from the train along with the missing bag and Silver’s investigations begin to centre on the Anglo-American Theatrical Syndicate, where both were employed.—Witness to the Crime [Suggest a different description.]
