Rachel Field's novel is based on the true story of Field's great-aunt, Henriette Deluzy-Desportes, a French governess who fell in love with the Duc de Praslin, her employer. When Praslin's wife was murdered, Henriette was implicated. It was a real-life scandal that contributed to the political turmoil before the French Revolution of 1848 which deposed France's Louis Philippe I. — Wikipedia.

Author Bio for Field, Rachel

Rachel Field (1894-1942) was an American writer known for her books for young adults. She won the Newbery Medal in 1929 for Hitty: Her First Hundred Years. She also wrote novels for adults; All This Heaven Too written in 1938 was turned into a movie starring Bette Davis and Charles Boyer. Among her other talents she wrote plays and lyrics including part of the script for the Disney movie Fantasia. (Poetry Foundation)
