In this, Mrs. Rinehart’s fiftieth book, she tells of murder and explores the hidden motives behind the people who lived in the great houses of an old and exclusive summer colony somewhere along the New England coast. The death of Juliette, beautiful, selfish divorcée, was brutal and shocking, but it brought relief to many. But murder bred more murder till the gay summer scene turned grim. And when the sheriff finally solved the complicated mystery, he said to Marcia: “If you’re writing that story, better call it ‘The Wall,’ ’cause that’s what it looked like I was up against.”—from the book jacket. Mary Roberts Rinehart (August 12, 1876–September 22, 1958) was an American writer, often called the American Agatha Christie. Rinehart published her first mystery novel The Circular Staircase in 1908, which introduced the "had I but known" narrative style. Rinehart is also considered the source of "the butler did it" plot device in her novel The Door (1930), although the exact phrase does not appear in her work.
