If you're prepared to acknowledge that the 'coincidence' at the start, which becomes an essential part of the narrative, is far-fetched and then get on with it, this is a smashing read with a modern tone and a plot that only Hitchcock could have done justice to. Why it was never filmed I can't imagine. The League of Nations, Geneva in the early '20s, German secret societies, sex slaves (well, okay, just the one and only a hint)...
