Eine durch Fahrlässigkeit erfolgte, erste Begegnung mit der ungezähmten Natur und den ebenso ungezügelten Bewohnern der texanischen Prärie endet mit einer Hinrichtung und zwei Morden. Sprachlich interessant, da die Icherzählung stark von US-Englisch geprägt ist. Der Text, der Texas unter mexikanischer Herrschaft schildert, spiegelt die Vorurteile seiner Zeit wider, u.a. durch Romantisierung bzw. qualitative Einordnung verschiedener Völker.

A first, careless encounter with the untamed natural world of the Texan prairie and its equally feral inhabitants ends with a lynching and two murders. The story, set during the period of Mexican rule, reflects the prejudices of its day, e.g. by judging different races to be superior or inferior. [Suggest a different description.]
