Author Bio for Stephen, Alexander Maitland
Alexander Maitland Stephen (1882-1942) was a Canadian writer of poetry and novels. Born in Hanover, Ontario, he went west as a young man. He tried various careers such as homesteader, cowboy, prospector, and school teacher. He eventually returned to school, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Architecture. He practised that profession until World War I when he enlisted in the army. He was wounded in France. After the war he got a job in journalism, editing for the Western Tribune. He became politically active and raised funds for the Republicans fighting in Spain against the fascists. His most significant poetic works include the Rosary of Pan and Verendrye: A Poem of the New World, both of which are available at Faded Page.
