Adam Larey is an 18-year-old, tenderfoot, Eastern boy. An accidental crime in a Western mining town drives him to escape into the desert wasteland. Harrowing, near-fatal experiences develop him into a heroic, chivalrous man, over the years. Compared to most Zane Grey novels, this book is unusually long, with its descriptions of the Death Valley and Mohave Desert settings, and their effect on the hero's lonely thoughts and psychological development.
