Hannah Cowley (1743-1809) was an English dramatist and poet. Born in Devon, England, she married Thomas Cowley, a civil servant. They moved to London where after seeing a mediocre play, she claimed that she could right a better one herself. She wrote "The Runaway" in 1776 and it was performed in Drury Lane. She receive £800 for her work and this helped to launch her literary career. She followed with 12 more plays, all comedies, a genre to which she excelled. She was one of the most successful female playwrights of her time.

Her poetry was less distinguished. She critiqued the poetry of Robert Merry under the pen-name 'Della Crusca' and her poetical writing led to the Della Cruscan school of poets who were known for their sentimental and florid verse. The group was later satirized by William Gifford in 1791 in a book called "The Baviad". Despite the success of her plays she shunned literary society and retired to Devon in 1801.
