Author Bio for Beckwith, Julia Catherine (Hart)

Author Image

Julia Catherine Beckwith (1796-1867) was an early Canadian author. Born in Fredericton N.B., she is reputed to be the first person born in British North America to write a novel. Her book, "St. Ursula's Convent, or the Nun of Canada", a two volume romance featured melodramatic elements such as shipwrecks, exchanged babies and a nefarious priest. The novel was considered an immature work even in its own time but it survives because of its historical importance. Beckwith wrote two more novels, one of which went unpublished.
