Author Bio for Fénelon, François (de la Mothe-Fénelon, François de Salignac)
François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon (1651-1715) was a French cleric and writer. He gained prominence by tutoring the duc de Burgogne, grandson of Louis the XIV, which won him an archbishopric and a favoured position in court. He lost favour due to the publication of his epic, Télémaque (1699) which indirectly reproved the policies of the king. He was then exiled to his diocese. He further expressed his liberal leanings in De l'education des filles (Treatise on the Education of Daughters. (Benet's Encyclopedia for Readers)
