Author Bio for Broughton, Rhoda
Rhoda Broughton (1840-1920) was a prolific British author. Born in Staffordshire she grew up in a house with a large library and was encouraged to read. After the death of her parents she lived with family in Wales and Oxford. She published her first novel at the age of 27, "Not Wisely but too Well" in the Dublin University Magazine. Her second novel, "Cometh up as a Flower" was well received which earned her top rates as an author of fiction. Her common plots were about the dilemma of love versus duty and she wrote dextrously about English country manners and dialogue. Broughton once characterized herself as starting her career as a Zola and ending as a Charlotte Yonge. She was won of the most successful novelists in terms of sales of the late Victorian period.
