Author Bio for FitzGerald, Edward
Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883) was an English translator. He was known during his lifetime for his wit and personal charm, "dear old Fitz" was his personal moniker to his friends. He is most famous for his translation of "The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám" (1859). Originally published anonymously, his participation was discovered and it was declared a masterpiece. Fitzgerald's translation was so free of bias as to be virtually an original work, masterful in its concentration, music and command of tone. (Benet's Encyclopedia for Readers)
